PHAs are Master Gardeners who help horticulture staff to meet the diagnostic needs of the gardening public by responding to inquiries about yard and garden care:
They also assist with the preparation of educational displays and exhibits related to plant health issues. To find out more about the PHA volunteer opportunities, reach out to:
Milwaukee County - Susan Taylor at Susan.taylor@wisc.edu
Waukesha County - Kristin Krokowski at krokowski@wisc.edu or call 262-548-7768
As a PHA, you have the satisfaction of helping others as well as learning more about horticulture. PHAs have opportunities for professional development including special training and monthly newsletters with updates on plant health issues.

Connecting youth with engaging and meaningful gardening projects and connecting MGVs with quality resources to work with them. Education includes: ongoing displays and activities at farmers markets - drop-in activities and take away educational pieces; elementary school high interest days; Earth Day celebrations; 4H events; State Fair scavenger hunt; Retzer Apple Fest, and Wehr Nature Center Bug Day.
Share your garden knowledge and the resources of the UW-Madison Extension; advise and teach volunteers, staff, and participants to help them plan, install, plant, care for, and harvest their community garden as needed. MGVs do not care for the garden but advise community members about how to care for their own garden. Generally a short-term project.
Volunteer by giving presentations to the public. Training is provided to all who are interested in giving presentations. Speaker notes are provided as well. If you are a member of SEWMG and would like to view the SEWMG Speakers Bureau Training Video, click here.
If you have questions, please Contact Jean Akhter or Terri Hart-Ellis, Speaker Bureau Co-Chairs.
